Surprised by Spring
No matter how many past springs we've witnessed, the unfolding of spring comes suddenly as if it is unexpected. We are a bit behind with vine pruning. But this is not a problem. It is a perfect excuse to blow off all other obligations and enjoy our favorite task under warming sunny skies.
So how do we know we are behind? Actually we really don't, because the temperatures over the next 30 days will determine the timing of bud break. Pruning should be finished by then, otherwise the tender buds will be damaged even with the gentlest of hands.
Bud break is best predicted by keeping track and recording benchmark events such as forsythia and magnolia flowering. And the peepers who woke up last week. The onomatopoetic peepers are small frogs that winter in wet places like ponds and bogs. When the soil warms to a certain temperature they peep. Thousands of peeps. All evening and all night. They are a bit late this spring, so that takes some pressure off our pruning deadline.
Spring Tasting
This weekend debuts a new tasting that includes comparisons of place (2020 Avenius and Hardscrabble Chardonnays), vintage (2021 and 2023 Avenius Sauvignon Blancs), and age (2014 and 2020 Petit Verdots). These wines were chosen to pair with spring: refreshing and lively! We are also releasing the 2023 Late Harvest Petit Manseng, the first vintage since 2017.
Winegrower's Selection
Picked by Jim Law, the Winegrower's Selection, Linden's subscription offering, includes six-bottle shipments twice a year of small-lot bottlings, unusual wines, and vintages of which we are particularly proud. The Spring 2025 shipment includes two very lively 2022 Sauvignon Blancs and the crystalline 2020 Avenius Chardonnay. We decided to "pre-release" the fruit forward 2022 Boisseau Red, and we raided the wine library for the 2016 Petit Verdot and the 2017 Hardscrabble Red.
The wines will ship the first week of April. The selection in April 2025 is $289. The last day to sign up for our Spring 2025 offering is March 31.
